Finding Confidence, Independence and Community at Oxford Head Injury Services
“I began attending Oxford Head Injury Services (OHIS) twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays, in July 2025.
After I suffered a haemorrhagic stroke while working out at the gym, my wife noticed that I had become withdrawn and was experiencing low mood and anxiety. She ‘strongly suggested’ that I should attend a session at OHIS, both for a change of environment and to spend time with people who were facing similar challenges after a brain injury.
I was immediately struck by the warmth of the welcome. The entire OHIS team are friendly, enthusiastic, caring and thoughtful and I felt part of the OHIS family before the end of my first session. Sharon dealt with Oxfordshire County Council to secure funding for both ARC attendance and wheelchair transport and OHIS immediately became a hugely beneficial part of my rehabilitation and adjustment to life after my stroke.
I am partial to word games and quizzes, but the OHIS team puts an enormous amount of effort into creating a varied and enjoyable programme of activities in which everyone can participate. Noodle Football has become one of my favourites, but you’ll have to join us for a game to find out more !
Having access to the gym and the specialist knowledge and experience that the neuro-physiotherapy team provide has had a massive impact on my recovery.
I still remember the first time I managed to stand from my wheelchair with the team beside me. Sophie developed a programme specifically for me, and Oli, Michelle and the wider team have supported and encouraged me throughout. I can now walk increasing distances with a frame and am beginning to use the toilet independently. I’m looking forward to ultimately reducing my care requirements.
Just as importantly, attending OHIS has helped me feel more positive, connected and confident about the future.
Everyone at OHIS genuinely wants me to overcome my challenges and with the OHIS family behind me, I am excited to see how much more confidence and independence I can regain.”
