Volunteer: Stephanie's Story

Stephanie is one of our incredible volunteers at our Activity & Rehabilitation Centre.

When I retired, I wanted to give something back to my local community. I was looking for the right volunteering opportunity when I saw Oxford Head Injury Services’ request for help with gardening.

I had previously helped a friend with transport to and from the Centre, so I already knew what a welcoming place it was. Being able to volunteer somewhere so local, with very little travel time, made it feel like the perfect fit.

I have now been volunteering with Oxford Head Injury Services for almost two years, and I can honestly say it is one of the best decisions I have made.

I get stuck into maintaining the garden and patio areas at the Centre. I usually come in at least once a week for a few hours to cut the grass, trim hedges, sweep paths and generally make the outside area pleasant for service users.

The outdoor spaces are used for all sorts of activities, from gardening and growing vegetables to afternoon teas, barbecues and music sessions. It is lovely knowing the space I help maintain is enjoyed by so many people. I love being part of the community. Whether it’s a smile, a wave or a chat in the sunshine while service users are having lunch, there is always a warm welcome. Everyone is so appreciative of everything I do. Not to mention the coffee and biscuits that keep me going!

For anyone considering volunteering with Oxford Head Injury Services, it is time to give something back. Every volunteer brings something different to the table. My skill happens to be gardening, but whatever your experience or interests, there is something valuable you can offer. The staff and volunteers are incredibly kind, there is a terrific team spirit, and it is heart-warming to see the difference even a few hours of volunteering can make.
